How To Write a Quality College Essay

It's one of the most despised requirements by college students: writing an essay. They vary in length, subject, citation style and format. The one constant is the general frustration and anxiety an essay can inflict upon a college student. But even before a student enters the college world, they still have to battle with essays during the application process. There's usually at least one essay required when applying to college. Now once you're in college, you'll be faced with what I call "semester essays." These are the big ones; at least 10 pages in length requiring hours of research and count for more than 20 percent of your overall grade.
Here are some basic tips that can help you get A's on all of your essays...
1.)Research, research, research. This is essential when writing a quality college essay. You must have some knowledge about what you're writing about. This doesn't mean you have to know every detail or insignificant fact, but you do need to acquire a basic sense of what the subject is and where to find the pertinent material. I've found that doing copious Google and Yahoo searches is great to acquire such knowledge. But don't just use the basic search engine function. Use "Google Scholar" to find academic journals. Also, take advantage of the research tools of your college's library. They can be extremely helpful when trying to obtain information about major subjects, especially in specific fields that may not provide alot of information on the web.
2.)Brainstorm and organize. Some people think brainstorming is so silly, but it's extremely beneficial when creating the foundation of your essay. You must think about how you want to present your topic and the stance you want to take. If it's a research paper, then brainstorm on how to organize the information in a fashion that will captivate your Professor. Speaking of organization, you should always write down, step by step, how you plan to write your essay. Break it down into a list, starting with the Intro then moving to Paragraph 1, 2, 3, and so on and so forth until you get to your conclusion. This will make it much easier to stay on track when writing a big essay.
3.)Make sure you are using proper citation and format. I've seen so many students get points taken off their essay due to simple mistakes like not formatting their paper properly and using incorrect citation. When I talk about format, I mean the text size and the spacing of your paper. The common format requirements are size 12 text, Times New Roman, and double-spaced. But this can vary from class to class, so be cognizant. Regarding citation, make sure you know exactly what citation form the professor desires. This can range from MLA, APA, all the way to Turabian/Chicago Style. Each citation has its own set of requirements when making in-text citations and creating your bibliography/works cited list, so make sure you have a firm grasp of the one required for your college essay. In-text citations usually feature (insert info here) or footnotes which feature small numbers next to your text followed by a small line of information at the bottom of each page.
Summation: If you follow those 3 steps, you should be on your way to creating a thought-provoking, detailed, and quality college essay that will truly impress your professor and land you an A+ in the class.

How to Write the Perfect College Essay

When application time rolls around, college admissions officers have a huge, daunting task ahead of them. They must sift through thousands and thousands of sheets of paper to try and spot the small percentage of students that meet their personal, subjective set of qualifications. Here are several tips on how to ensure that you'll be selected into that group.
1. Be original so you can stand out.
Before selecting the subject on which to write your paper, ask yourself these questions: What is the craziest, most intense, or most incredible thing that's ever happened to me? What did I learn from it? Why am I different than everyone in my high school class? What do people not understand about me?
Answer these questions and use your best, most creative answer as a foundation for your essay. Such an essay is bound to impress application officers much more than a simple description of your championship basketball game, that one time you helped an old woman cross the street, or the day you hit the high note during your jazz choir performance. The reality is: they've read those papers hundreds and thousands of times before!
2. Be Specific - Really Specific!
Try to avoid being generic at all costs. Using general phrases like "I was nervous" or "my brother supported me" can quickly bring down the quality of an essay. Instead, ask yourself: without using the word 'nervous,' how did you actually, physically feel? Or, instead of generalizing, provide a specific example of when and how your brother supported you. Such specifications and allow it to stand out.
3. Use your own personal voice.
The whole purpose of writing an application essay is to prove to the school that you would add something to their student body. Colleges want students with original ideas, a sense of humor, and the type of personality that will set them apart in the future. Let this come through in your essay. If you're a sarcastic person, use sarcasm in your essay. Poke fun at yourself! Make admissions officers laugh! Even though college applications are a highly structured, formal process, don't worry about being overly formal in your essay. This is your single chance to add personal flair to your application package, so sell yourself.

College Essay - How to Write an Awesome College Essay

The college essay is a very important part of the application process in today's world. The college essay can be more important than your SAT or ACT scores. A well written, planned and thoughtful essay can catapult your application to the head of the line. So don't treat the preparation of your college essay lightly, make time to properly organize, write and rewrite your essay. The rewards will be amazing.
The first step in preparing an awesome college essay is to think of your essay as three individual chunks:
  • the opening
  • the body
  • the closing
Your opening is the second most important part of your essay, but it is the first part to be read. So, you must grab the reader's attention in the first sentence. You can accomplish this by using a quote, a startling statement or a controversial headline. The newspapers, magazines and television media are chock full of ideas and themes you might use for your essay. Just be sure that the quote or headline are poignant to your subject. The body is the least important part of your speech but it must filled with useful and meaningful information. It is the body that will explain the points that you submitted in your opening. Don't wander from the plan that you laid out in your opening stay to the specifics and just explain your original points. If you have three points than write three supporting paragraphs. You don't need any more or any less information.
Your closing is the most important part of your essay. Your closing is where you take all your points and put them in a little package for everyone to remember. You must repeat what has been said in both the opening and the body in a way that will be memorable. That's right, your closing must be memorable. You must end with a quote, a saying or a point that will make your college essay stand out and say wow.
It won't be easy but if you put a little extra effort into your closing it will make the difference in your essay.
The next step in preparing an awesome college essay is to make sure you answer the question, "Why me?" Your essay in the context of the theme should tell the reader why you are the one for their school. But don't rattle off a bunch of stats as if it's a resume rather mix your attributes into the context of the essay's theme using only those attributes that are germane to the theme.

How to Write College Admission Essays Using SMART Mnemonic

Nine out of ten college students who write college admissions essays use popular writing techniques and persuasion strategies to win the hearts of the evaluator. SMART mnemonic, though widely used in project management vocabulary, is now extending its hands to help students write college admission essays better and smarter. SMART stands for Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Time bound. This is article is not just fun to read but easy to apply too.
Specific: Examiners look for candidates who are specific, clear and concise in their thoughts and opinions in the essays. For instance, If you think you believe hard work and smart work together play vital role for success, give specific instances and incidents in your life that supports your belief to persuade the examiner.
Measurable: Here, measurable means a measurable tone of voice. Does your essay have a friendly, polite, yet persuasive style of language? Does it contain phrases that are positive, words that are politically correct, statements that do not provoke any community, culture, tradition and custom beliefs in to arguments? If yes, you have more chances to get good scores in your essay tests.
Attainable: "Once I graduate from your University, I will cure AIDS, eliminate this deadly disease from the world" is one statement made by a medical student in one essay. Is this promise attainable? If yes, what are your support details? Are these details persuasive enough so that the examiner accepts them as practical evidence?
Realistic: Though you are selling yourself in the admission essay, the sales pitch must be realistic. Too exaggerated vocabulary such as "I saved the life of millions" or "I am the only responsible son in the family other any of my siblings" could be avoided.

Time bound is including all your recent achievements in a chronological order with the recent awards and recognitions at the top of essay.

Tips On How To Write A Good College Essay

If you are applying to a college that has a very competitive application process, then your essay can be the one thing that sets you apart from the rest of the applicants. Writing the perfect college application essay is a matter of combining personal experiences along with factual information about the college in which you are applying into a coherent essay that ends with your admission to their college. Here are some application essay examples and some advice on how to write the perfect essay.
Determine what direction you want to take when writing your essay. You can research the college of your choice online and search out specific information about the course of study you wish to pursue. You can then use the information you have gathered and include it in your essay. Ultimately you want to show them how their college will help you achieve your academic goals.
You need to take the information about the college and include it with a personal experience. They don't want to hear regurgitated information about their school, you need to show them who you are and why you think their college is the right choice for you. Pick a very influential experience you have had, the more personal the experience the more interested they will be in what you are writing.
Usually application essays are limited to 500 words, so you will want to choose your topic carefully. With such a limited amount of content allowed, you will likely only have room to write about one experience. The story you choose to write about should be interesting enough to capture the admissions officer's attention. You want to seem as insightful as possible; this allows the admissions officer to see that you are aware of your choices in life, and that you are eager to pursue your educational goals.
Being that there are so many students that apply to college, it is likely that the admissions officer will only have one or two minutes to read your essay. So you will want to grab their attention within the first few sentences of your introduction. Begin your essay with a personal story, and instead of just telling the story, you want to take the reader into your story.
Your college application essay is one of the most important parts of your college application. The more you study college application essay examples, and research the particular college in which you are applying, the better prepared you will be to write your own essay. Take your time and proofread and edit your essay, you want it to be free of any grammatical errors. This is the first and only impression you will be able to make on the college you are applying to.

How to Write a College Admission-Worthy Essay

The personal statement or admission essay is one of the most important aspects of your entire college application. Unlike your transcript, your essay gives you the chance to show that admission officer who you really are. Your spelling, grammar, and writing have to be completely perfect - nothing will get your application essay thrown out faster than these common errors. But most importantly you must stand out - in a good way - among the stack of applications they may be reading that day.
First, you should think about an aspect of your personality or an experience you have had that make you very unique. Think about a difficult situation that you have overcome. Describe why you were in that situation, how it made you feel, and what you learned from it. Everyone is going to write about why they want to attend that college, but you're really trying to get them to understand why you would be a unique asset to the student body.
Second, rely on your own experiences. It is great if your dad is an astronaut - but unless you were on the shuttle when he traveled to the international space station - it is really not even worth mentioning. Remember, what makes you unique does not have to be that impressive. You don't need to talk about publishing your first movie at the age of 13 - unless you actually did which is definitely worth mentioning. The reader wants a compelling story. I was accepted to every college to which I applied and I wrote my entire essay about how it felt to be asked - "What are you?" as a person who happens to be biracial. How you share it will be more important than the actual event or experience.
Also, try to avoid experiences that may be better contextualized in person rather than in 500 words or less. For example, it's wonderful if you have faith God will help you get into college - but unless the particular person reading your essay also believes in God in that way - you may end up confusing - or worse - offending the reader - which will definitely get your application placed on the bottom of the stack.
Finally, start writing your essay early enough in advance of any application deadlines so that you can get a few other people to read it before you submit. They can help you proofread for errors. More importantly, having a few different readers will give you the chance to see if your story is clear, interesting, and completely inoffensive to others.
In summary, you must proofread like crazy to ensure that there are absolutely no spelling or grammatical errors, tell an interesting story, and have as many others review it as possible. If you follow these tips, you will have a college essay that will secure your spot in the incoming class.
